13. ROW, OFFSET, INDIRECT

Lesson 13 of 20
Task 1 of 3
  1. In A2:A10, number the rows with the ROW function.

Lesson theory
  • =ROW() returns the row number of the formula's cell. =ROW()-1 gives numbering that does not break when you sort or delete rows;
  • =OFFSET(start, rows, columns, height, width) returns a range shifted from a starting cell. This is how you get "the last 3 months": the table grows and the formula looks at the end by itself;
  • =INDIRECT("B"&F5) returns a reference built from text.
=SUM(OFFSET(C1,COUNT(C2:C13)-2,0,3,1)) is the sum of the last three filled months.
