In G2:G4, find the employee ID for each name. The ID is to the left of the name, so VLOOKUP will not help.

VLOOKUP only searches the first column and returns data to the right of it. The INDEX+MATCH pair works in any direction.
MATCH(lookup_value, range, 0)returns the position of the value in the range;INDEX(column, position)returns the value from the column at that position.
