2. Power Query: Cleaning an Export

Lesson 2 of 8
Task 1 of 5
  1. Create a query from the "Orders" table and remove the "Note" column.

Lesson theory

Power Query (Data › Get Data › From Table/Range) records every action as a step. Tomorrow a new export arrives — click "Refresh" and all the steps repeat on their own. Your source data stays untouched.

  • Remove Columns — drop what you don't need (Home › Remove Columns);
  • Filter Rows — keep what you need, like an AutoFilter but recorded as a query step;
  • Change Type — turn the text "450" into a number, otherwise the amounts can't be summed;
  • Split Column by delimiter — "Austin, Downtown" becomes two columns.

In the trainer, the Power Query editor sits under the sheet. Pick a source, add steps with the "+ Step" button, and check the result after each step (click a step in the "Applied Steps" list). The M formula of the step is shown above the preview. Remove a wrong step with "Delete last step".
