TRANSPOSE in Google Sheets

TRANSPOSE spills its result in Google Sheets without ARRAYFORMULA, swapping rows and columns of a range.

Syntax (same in Google Sheets)

TRANSPOSE(array)

The result is live: change the source and the transposed block follows.

For a fuller explanation of the arguments and common errors, see the TRANSPOSE Excel guide.

Worked examples in Google Sheets

Row to column

ABC
1MonTueWed

Formula: A3: =TRANSPOSE(A1:C1)

Result: Spills down: Mon, Tue, Wed

The three entries of the row spill down in a column starting at A3.

Dot product of a column and a row

ABCD
1xyz
22123
33
44

Formula: F2: =SUMPRODUCT(A2:A4,TRANSPOSE(B2:D2))

Result: 20

The row 1, 2, 3 is turned into a column and multiplied element by element with 2, 3, 4.

One element of a flipped block

AB
1ab
2cd
3ef

Formula: D1: =INDEX(TRANSPOSE(A1:B3),2,3)

Result: f

The 3-row block becomes 2 rows by 3 columns, and row 2, column 3 is the original B3.

Try it

A tiny spreadsheet with example data. Edit the formula or any number and see the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is TRANSPOSE better than Paste special, Transposed in Google Sheets?
It depends. The formula stays linked to the source and updates; Paste special, Transposed makes a one-off copy that you can edit.
