OR in Google Sheets

OR also collapses a range into a single answer in Google Sheets, even when it sits inside ARRAYFORMULA.

Syntax (same in Google Sheets)

OR(logical1, logical2, …)

Add the conditions together for a row-wise result, as in ARRAYFORMULA((A2:A9="East")+(A2:A9="West")>0).

For a fuller explanation of the arguments and common errors, see the OR Excel guide.

Worked examples in Google Sheets

One threshold passes

AB
1ScoreOverride
265Yes

Formula: D2: =OR(A2>=70,B2="Yes")

Result: TRUE

The override makes the result true even though the score is low.

No alternative passes

AB
1ScoreOverride
265No

Formula: D2: =OR(A2>=70,B2="Yes")

Result: FALSE

Both alternatives are false.

Match one category

A
1Region
2West

Formula: C2: =OR(A2="East",A2="West")

Result: TRUE

West matches one of the two accepted regions.

Try it

A tiny spreadsheet with example data. Edit the formula or any number and see the result.

Formula in F2: =OR(B2>=90,C2="Yes")

Example spreadsheet for OR
ABCDEF
1StudentScoreExtra creditAttemptsResult
2Ann92Yes2TRUE
3Bob74No0
4Cy58Yes3
5Dee81No1

Result in F2: TRUE
Practice this in a lesson: AND, OR, NOT

Frequently asked questions

How do I get an OR result for every row in Google Sheets?
Add the tests together and compare the sum with 0, because the plus sign works element by element inside ARRAYFORMULA.
