LEN in Google Sheets

In Google Sheets, LEN over a range returns a single number unless it is wrapped in ARRAYFORMULA, which gives one length per row.

Syntax (same in Google Sheets)

LEN(text)

Combine it with an open-ended range such as A2:A to keep counting as the data grows.

For a fuller explanation of the arguments and common errors, see the LEN Excel guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the length of every cell in a column in Google Sheets?
Use =ARRAYFORMULA(LEN(A2:A)) in the first cell of an empty column. Wrap it in an IF test on A2:A if you want blank rows to stay blank.
