Worked examples in Google Sheets

Remove a tab

A
1Word
2Tab

Formula: C2: =CLEAN(A2&CHAR(9)&"bed")

Result: Tabbed

CHAR(9) is a tab character; CLEAN deletes it so the word closes up.

Count after cleaning

A
1Start
2ab

Formula: C2: =LEN(CLEAN(A2&CHAR(7)&"cd"))

Result: 4

CHAR(7) is invisible; after CLEAN only the four visible letters are counted.

Non-breaking space survives

A
1Start
2a

Formula: C2: =LEN(CLEAN(A2&UNICHAR(160)&"b"))

Result: 3

Unicode 160 is outside the 0 to 31 range, so CLEAN does not touch it and the length stays 3.
